Video shows man dragged after being shot during Bahraich Durga Puja violence

Communal violence erupted in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich on October 13 after a 22-year-old man was shot dead during a Durga idol procession. A video has now emerged showing the moment after Ram Gopal Mishra, who was part of the procession, was fatally shot and being dragged.
The 44-second video shows people dragging an injured Mishra while men opening fire on those who were trying to rescue him, who sustained serious injuries and later died in the hospital.

Tensions escalated following Mishra’s death, with scores of people, some armed with sticks, damaging property during his funeral. Several shops were burnt down, and vehicles were torched by angry crowds in the Maharajganj area.
Several people were injured in stone pelting and firing. Internet services have been suspended in Bahraich district as a precautionary measure, which continued on Wednesday as well. A large number of police and security personnel have been deployed. Markets remained shut, and people stayed indoors even on Tuesday.

Salman (in pic) is suspected of killing Mishra.

Over 50 people have been arrested in connection with the violence.
A total of 12 companies of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), two companies of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and one company of the Rapid Action Force (RAF), along with additional police forces from the Gorakhpur zone, have been deployed to monitor the district.
The main accused in Sunday’s incident, Salman, who is suspected of killing Mishra, is still at large. The Uttar Pradesh Police said efforts to arrest him are underway.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath met Mishra’s family on Tuesday and assured them that the “culprits of this unforgivable incident will not be spared.” An immediate financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh has also been announced for the family.
